Historical magnetic tape technologies are among the 20th century’s most significant media practices. Once ubiquitous, the medium now feels obsolete and frequently gets marginalized. That particularly applies to audio tape products manufactured by East German companies AFGA (1954–1964) and ORWO (1964–1994). More than ninety percent of the Potsdam Film Museum’s collections are film and sound rolls made in Wolfen–differing in composition and materials from those of their competitors due to historical product development factors. This survey-talk builds bridges between history, technology, conservation science, and day-to-day archive operations.
