Back to the calendarFRG 1974, directed by Werner Herzog
Based on the real-life case of Kaspar Hauser, Werner Herzog tells the story of an orphan who grew up in a cellar devoid of human contact as the passion narrative of an outsider who finds no place for himself in the “civilized” world. After Kaspar gets taken in by humanist and pedagogue Daumer and learns basic human functions like talking, walking, sitting at the table, and even playing the piano, the “Natural Child” comes into ever more conflict with the expectations of an early 19th century philistine society governed in equal parts by rationality and religion. Ultimately, he falls victim to murder.
