Bettina, a young racing car driver, is involved in a crash during a test drive in Sicily. Luckily, handsome adventurer Harry Bredow is there to save her after she is knocked unconscious. When she comes round, he has disappeared. From then on, Bettina’s thoughts only revolve around her mysterious rescuer whom she desperately wants to meet again. High-speed racing, fancy cars and Mediterranean passion from the late 1920s – this is one of the first German films to be made during the transition from silent to sound movies.
During the restoration of ‘The Night Belongs To Us’, the picture was almost completely restored thanks to newly discovered reels of the camera negative. Unfortunately, the corresponding sound reels have not been found, which results in several silent scenes, especially during the finale, a highly charged car chase between the two main characters. Subtitles based on censorship records have been inserted during this scene. The project is supported by the Film Heritage Subsidy Programme (FFE) and has been financed by the German Commissioner for Culture and Media, the Länder and German Federal Film Board.
