The Belgian constitution forbids censorship in all media, including film, giving the impression that Belgium is a liberal, cinephile nation. Up until 2020, optional ratings only existed for films aimed at children or young adults under 16. However, the Belgian Film Classification Commission, which was set up in 2020 to assess these films for violence, sex, drug use and so on, did not hesitate to make far-reaching cuts. The Belgian Cinematek holds many of these clippings. From these, Daniël Biltereyst and Bruno Mestdagh crafted ‘Ongezien/Invisible’, made up of images not shown in Belgian cinemas.
Special partners in the process of creating this film were Ghent University and Film Fest Ghent.
