From home movies and travelogues to experimental animations and live action films, these eight films represent a wide variety of amateur films made by Irish women in the 1960s. The filmmakers Margaret Currivan, Agnes Heron, Flora Kerrigan and Maureen MacMahon all exhibit their own creative approaches to the craft of filmmaking. Their work encourages us to consider what it means to be an amateur filmmaker and reminds us of the vitality and intimacy of this film style.
The films were digitised as part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)/Irish Research Council (IRC) funded project, “Women in Focus: Developing a Feminist Approach to Film Archive Metadata and Cataloguing”, which aims to incorporate feminist praxis into archival metadata and help better represent the contributions of women in early amateur filmmaking. The process has been complex and varied given the challenges involved in digitising the work of very different filmmakers and films stored in varying conditions.
