In English
Husseyin arrives in West Berlin from Turkey, wanders through subway stations and gazes uncertainly yet curiously up at the buildings. His new environment despises him: whether in his monotonous job operating a pressing machine, nosiness on the stairwell or everyday racism, he lacks a sense of home. The only solidarity he finds is within his Kreuzberg community. Sohrab Shahid Saless’ first film shot in Germany gives insight into the life of a person who has left home and is forced to keep looking for a new one. It depicts the after-effects of German immigration policies on the individual, which continue to this day.
The film was scanned and restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera and optical sound negative by Film Shift in Munich. The restoration was carried out with the support of the Film Heritage Subsidy Programme (FFE) and the Goethe Institut and is part of a large project whose goal is to make all Saless’ films accessible in new digital versions. The project was initiated and curated by the film historian Vivien Buchhorn.
