Belting Out Sound (And How?) – Restoration of a Silent Film with Sound: The Chase After Millions
Back to the calendarThe Chase After Millions premiered in Berlin on March 31, 1930 as a silent movie. Shortly thereafter, production company Aafa-Film AG added music and sound effects on Tri-Ergon brand shellac records in a process called sound-on-disc. The silent and “sound” versions were distributed worldwide in parallel, depending on whether theaters had already switched to the new sound technology. This workshop report delves into complex image and sound restoration processes, highlighting technical, curatorial, and restoration-ethical challenges.
Workshop report: Anke Mebold (DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, Frankfurt), Oliver Hanley (Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf) und Oliver Danner (Tonrestaurator, Berlin)
