Original Scores as Both Challenge and Opportunity in Restoring Silent Films, with Lupu Pick’s Sylvester as Case in Point
Back to the calendarThe original German version of Lupu Pick’s Sylvester only survives in a severely truncated version. The Munich Film Museum based its 2004 reconstruction on a nitrate print of the English version preserved in Japan and the script and editing of the French version, also intact. The Deutsche Kinemathek is currently working on a digital restoration of Sylvester and was able to track down Klaus Pringsheim’s original score of the premiere music, containing more invaluable indications as to the original cut. Based on the existing reconstruction and Pringsheim’s markings in the score, the film and music have now been reconstructed again in close collaboration with conductor Frank Strobel.
