Introduction: Sona Karapoghosyan (film critic and curator)
In English
In the 1960s, animation became one of the most creative and celebrated facets of Armenian cinema. It was also the only area of filmmaking that provided an entry point for female filmmakers during the Soviet years. Between the 1970s and 1990s, four important women directors began working in animation, significantly influencing the development of the medium and bridging its transition into Armenia’s post-Soviet era. This programme of ten films provides insights into the work of Elvira Avakyan, Gayane Martirosyan, Naira Muradyan and Lyudmila Sahakyants who have enriched this art form not only with their highly idiosyncratic stylistic sensibilities but also new concerns addressing contemporary life, politics and technology.
In 2023, the National Cinema Center of Armenia undertook a major digitisation and restoration project to preserve films by these pioneering women filmmakers. Sourced from the best available 35mm materials in Armenian and Russian archives, these new 4K restorations should help to expand perceptions of Armenia’s film heritage.
