Two films from the Digitalzação Viajante (Travelling Digitisation) project in Brazil exemplify the wave of radical queer Super-8 cinema that took place in northeastern Brazil in the late 1970s and early 1980s: ‘Closes’ is a docu-fiction about conflicts and prejudices involving sexuality in this region. ‘Baltazar da Lomba’ recounts the first historical record of the repression of homosexuality in the state of Paraíba during the colonial period.
The Travelling Digitisation project has visited six different Brazilian cities and digitised over 300 films in 2K from October 2022 to February 2023. Using a portable Super 8 and 8mm scanner and workstation, the project aimed to address the lack of digitisation initiatives for small gauge amateur, independent and orphan films. This has helped to bridge the gap in public access to forgotten or neglected film productions.
