‘Ishanou’ is a poignant tale of love and loss steeped in Manipuri culture. It tells the story of the young woman Tampha, who abandons her husband and daughter to join the Maibi sect of priestesses in response to the deity’s inexorable call. But underneath her immersion in the mystical world lurks the anguish of a mother alienated from her child. The vivid depiction of the Maibi culture lends the film an authenticity that blends storytelling, documentary and ethnography.
Restored in 4K by Film Heritage Foundation at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory and Prasad Corporation’s studios in Chennai, in association with Aribam Syam Sharma and the Manipur State Film Development Society. Source materials were the 16mm original camera negative and two 35mm prints. Funding was provided by the Film Heritage Foundation with the generous support of Dr Richard Meyer and Susan Harmon.
