Introduction: Holger Ziegler (DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, Frankfurt/Main)
Set in Hamburg in 1943, the film is about renowned scientific researcher Dr. Rothe. When he realizes that his fiancée has been passing the results of his work to the enemy, he murders her in a fit of rage. His colleague Hösch covers up the crime because Rothe’s work is important to the Nazi war effort. But from his first taste of it, Rothe is obsessed with murdering over and over again. After the war, he works under a false name in a refugee camp, where he suddenly encounters his former colleague.
