German-language nature films and documentaries represent a vast, rich pool of material for preservation and restoration, both for reasons of cultural and natural history, but also in terms of aesthetics and film history. This panel discussion will explore various collections. In his “nature films”, Herrmann Kricheldorff (1868–1928) documented, among other things, underwater fauna and the world of insects. Found nitrate film footage of his was sorted at Berlin’s University of Applied Sciences (HTW). With ‘Unternehmen Xarifa’ (Under the Caribbean, 1954), underwater film pioneer Hans Hass shot one of the first underwater films in color. The intertwining of differing color processes was a particular challenge during digitization, undertaken by the Filmarchiv Austria. Finally, the DFF German film museum in Frankfurt preserved and digitized the films left behind by Eugen Schumacher, a pioneer of German nature films.
