Curator-led tour through the exhibition “Werner Herzog”

The difference between narrative and documentary film has never meant much to Werner Herzog. Whether proffering up found footage, playing with re-enactment strategies, juxtaposing ethnographic images with classical music, or – pursuant to his theory of “ecstatic truth” – simply making things up as he goes. Herzog’s artistic self is always part of the story. In particular, his unmistakable off-camera voice provides legitimization to the documentaries. That approach led to conflict with the commissioning broadcaster on ‘Little Dieter Needs to Fly’, as the correspondence in this exhibition shows. The film became a template for numerous re-enactment films, such as ‘The Act of Killing’ (DK, NO, UK, 2012), produced by Herzog and directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, who will also be heard in the exhibition.
