Introduction: György Ráduly (NFI Filmarchívum)
In 1945, a group of orphans scour the post-war countryside in search of food and shelter. They stumble upon a bombed-out castle where a musician is sheltering. After an initial altercation, he takes the gang under his wing, winning their respect by protecting them from the elements. Written by film theorist Béla Balázs and directed by the legendary Géza von Radványi, this was the first internationally successful Hungarian film after World War II. It represented a cri de coeur to a Europe coming to its senses after the war.
