‘Kuhle Wampe’ premiered in Moscow in May 1932. The film initially had a runtime of ca. 80 minutes. Due to its political stance, however, it was banned in Germany. After edits that shortened it by about four minutes, it passed the censors and premiered in Berlin on May 30, 1932. Then in March 1933, the board of censors, now under Nazi control, banned ‘Kuhle Wampe’ for good. With a script by Bertolt Brecht and Ernst Ottwalt, it is now considered a milestone of political cinema.
