A young boy is at the center of this film about life in Germany in the immediate aftermath of World War II. He keeps his family afloat with black market deals and petty swindles. His sister earns a little money flirting with Allied soldiers. Their father is sick and gripped by hopelessness. Shot at the geographic center of the Nazi regime, Rossellini’s characters are not looking forward to a rosy future. The face of the young boy, his actions, are an echo of the effects of a regime of terror.
