Introduction: Anke Hahn (Deutsche Kinemathek)
Leopold Kessler is an American of German descent who arrives in Germany immediately after the end of World War II with the goodhearted intent of helping to rebuild the decimated country. He gets a job as a sleeping car conductor with the Zentropa rail company, which was complicit with the Nazis and involved in the deportations, but is now working with the Allies. Lars von Trier’s Europe is a nightmarish continent, a dark maelstrom that sucks down Leo’s naïve dreams of building a better world.
