Set both during World War II and twenty years after the war, this challenging work by Rolands Kalniņš follows three friends through war, death, espionage, and a later reunion and reappraisal of the past. It was written, filmed, and released during the Soviet era and was extensively modified at the time to serve the government’s propaganda purposes.

It is a censored masterpiece that required restoration of both the original and the censored versions to fully uncover the story of this work.
