AN ERA OF UPHEAVAL
With a newly composed score by Marco Brosolo
Introduction: Kristina Jaspers (curator, Deutsche Kinemathek)
Thomas, the eldest son of the respected Buddenbrook merchant family, is commissioned to handle a grain delivery for his home town of Lübeck. If he fails to deliver on time, he is threatened with a heavy penalty. When his brother Christian, more a ladies’ man than a businessman, forgets an important bank transfer, the professional and personal downfall of the middle-class family takes its course. Loosely based on Thomas Mann’s eponymous novel, the action was moved to the 1920s and therefore reflected the audience’s own experiences of social upheaval in the 1920s. The film’s success ensured Gerhard Lamprecht’s breakthrough as a director and is a good example of his longtime collaboration with screenwriter Luise Heilborn-Körbitz.
