Rosita Perez and her 12-year-old daughter Isabel have been living in East Germany for six years, after fleeing Chile in the wake of the Pinochet coup. A family named Kunze originally sponsored their immigration, but they have limited contact. The young girl often sits on the stairs, hoping to intercept the postman in case he is bringing news of her father’s death in Chile. When the news finally does arrive and Rosita collapses, Isabel finds a loving new home with the Kunze family.
