The World Cinema Project’s mission to “give a new life to masterpieces, […] and expand the canon of world cinema” led to the rediscovery of Indian New Wave filmmaker G. Aravindan (1935–1991). The restored 4k version of his 1978 ‘Thamp̄’ (The Circus Tent) has screened internationally. The black-and-white film about an itinerant circus troupe moves seamlessly between documentary and narrative. Ramu Aravindan and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, both closely Involved in the restoration, will first talk about the process and challenges of restoring documentary images – remaining true to their original “imperfections”, yet rendering them accessible to modern viewers. Ameet Parameswaran will then explore the circus arts as an experience in creating worlds. Veena Hariharan will introduce the film and chair the discussion.
