The Keys

‘Die Schlüssel’, GDR 1974, directed by Egon Günther, 97 min, German without subtitles, rating: 0

Worker Ric and her younger boyfriend Klaus, an architecture student, meet a man at Warsaw airport who offers them the keys to his apartment in Krakow. They accept gratefully and drive to Poland for a two-week stay. But the journey brings out the couple’s inequality. While Klaus constantly criticizes Ric and seems ashamed of her, she enjoys discovering Krakow with childlike joy.

Director Egon Günther breaks up the fictional plot with improvised episodes, creating an authenticity that reflects both the couple’s complex relationship and the still-open wounds of Germany’s past in Poland.
