The Folk Upstairs
‘Menschen untereinander’, GER 1926, directed by Gerhard Lamprecht, 119 min, silent with English subtitles, rated: 0
An ordinary tenement building reflects society in 1920s’ Berlin. A lawyer, a jeweler, a wealthy widow, and a civil servant live on the first and second floors. The higher the floor, the poorer the tenants, all the way to the attic, where a piano teacher and a balloon seller each live with their families. Avarice, poverty, corruption, and loneliness are as present in this community as compassion and love.
