Death and the Devil

Count Eric von Rosen poses proudly in front of a shot elephant. Or he presses the shutter to photograph natives from the Congo, framing them as ‘foreign’ or ‘exotic’ with a stereotypical colonial gaze. Documentary-maker Peter Nestler, who made films of oppressed and persecuted people, portrays the life of this perpetrator, colonial ruler, and high-ranking Nazi – a man who was also his grandfather.
