Bangkok/Berlin, 30 April 2024 – A great honour for the Deutsche Kinemathek: As part of this year’s International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) Congress in Bangkok, Berlin was chosen by a large majority as the venue for the FIAF Congress 2027. It will be the first time in 40 years that the most significant congress for international film heritage institutions will take place in Germany, and for the first time in the reunified capital.
FIAF was founded in 1938 and unites the world’s leading film archives to promote the preservation and accessibility of global film heritage, and to define common standards for their preservation and restoration. Once a year, representatives from over 170 institutions and 5 continents meet to exchange experiences. The annual two-day symposium is dedicated to a current topic. The Deutsche Kinemathek’s proposal to focus in 2027 on major shifts – whether political, social, aesthetic or technological – and the challenges and volatility these mean in areas of archival work, convinced FIAF members.
“The overwhelming approval of our proposed topic shows that the FIAF is prepared to face the challenges for film archives in the near future. It also greatly encourages us in the work we have driven forward in recent years. The Kinemathek looks forward to exchanging ideas with colleagues from all over the world,” said Rainer Rother, Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kinemathek.
The Deutsche Kinemathek has been a member of FIAF since 1966 and has completed numerous projects in close cooperation with its members, including joint restorations, the annual film heritage festival “Film Restored” with the participation of FIAF members, and most recently, the evacuation of acutely threatened Afghan film archivists and their families, together with the German Foreign Office, the Artist Alliance Foundation and Arsenal cinema.
The 2027 congress will take place at E-Werk, the new temporary location of the Kinemathek in Berlin-Mitte, as well as at other locations in cooperation with the 'visitBerlin' Convention Office.
The Deutsche Kinemathek receives funding from the German Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
