The Textile Archive at the Deutsche Kinemathek was founded in October 1993 with the acquisition of the Marlene Dietrich Collection Berlin (MDCB). The archive now has more than 5,500 individual objects, with 3,200 of them belonging to the MDCB. The Marlene Dietrich Collection features costumes from films and concerts, as well as her personal high-quality garments produced by many of America and France's finest couturiers. Both are in high demand for exhibitions around the world.
We also exhibit costumes and textile accessories from numerous film and television productions, including those worn by actors such as Bruno Ganz, Asta Nielsen and Romy Schneider; this includes textile products from the Berlin company Theaterkunst GmbH, which has worked with famous customer designers to supplying films for more than 100 years. Other costumes have been provided to us in the form of permanent loans, or granted to us as acquisitions or gifts, as our institution is the sole one of its kind in Germany with a professionally run textile archive.
