Heinrich Breloer
screenwriter, Director
* 17.02.1942
Breloer, who had earned a PhD in literature, turned his attention to television in the early 1970s, where he wrote and directed a series critical of the media. With Horst Königstein, an editor for NDR, he developed a new way of approaching historical material. This “offene Form” [open form] (Breloer) set new standards in the genre. It explored the often complex relationships between personal memories and how history is officially written.
About the Estate
Finding Aid (PDF)Since 2012 the Deutsche Kinemathek has been preserving Breloer’s private production archive with extensive research and production materials on his most important films. It comprises scripts and storyboards, transcripts of eyewitness interviews, as well as correspondence, contracts, press clippings, graphics, photographs, 3D objects and drawings. The comprehensive collection mainly focuses on research material on the subjects of his films and consequently provides precise insights into Breloer’s systematic, thorough and knowledgeable working methods. Copies of miscellaneous correspondence reveal and document the often lengthy production processes.
Breloer’s correspondence with the families von Schirach and Speer for the film ‘Speer und Er’ (GER, 2005) is impressive both in content and scope, as is his correspondence with Bernd Otto for the docudrama ‘Kollege Otto. Die Coop-Affäre’ (GER, 1991). However, the rights to use these materials are restricted. Breloer, the collection’s creator, continually augmented his archive. He received numerous awards for his docudrama and won the “Special Award” of the Grimme-Preis in 2020 for his life’s work. In 2008 Breloer dedicated his late feature film debut to ‘Buddenbrooks’, Thomas Mann’s novel. (Text: Klaudia Wick)
