Author and director Heinrich Breloer has spent decades using one specific narrative form – the docudrama – to explore the truly grand themes that have moved and shaped West Germany society at a political and cultural level. His work with this "open form" (in Breloer's own words) since the 1970s has blurred traditional boundaries between documentary and fiction and set new artistic benchmarks, especially on television. Often performed in collaboration with his colleague, friend and compatriot Horst Königstein, Breloer's work frequently explores the complex connections between the official annals of history and the importance of the seemingly banal amidst the great and grand, often to wonderfully surprising effect.
The Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen maintains a website, breloer.deutsche-kinemathek.de, with selections from the production archive bequeathed by author and director Heinrich Breloer. Fans of his work, as well as academics and researchers, are welcome to visit the repository online and delve into the director's methods.
