ESCAPE INTO GENRE FILM – DANDIES AND LADIES
Introduction: Stefan Jung (film scholar and author)
This entertaining spy film is driven by a race to find secret blueprints for an anti-aircraft defense system, the recovery of which leads secret service agent Captain Bergall (Hans Albers) from Venice to Rome, and to the art dealer Tschernikoff (Albert Bassermann). Fast-paced, with snappy dialogue and a first-rate cast, this film reflects Lamprecht’s craftsmanship in genre adaptations, which is characteristic of his work from the 1930s and 1940s.
G 1934, directed by Gerhard Lamprecht, DCP, OV w/English subtitles, 90 min Cast: Käthe von Nagy, Wolf Albach-Retty, Gretl Theimer, Ida Wüst, Gustav Waldau
Young Kitty Holm is a secretary at a Berlin car dealership and dreams of being a great lady one day. When she delivers a car to the upper-class spa town of Sophienbad, a misunderstanding persists, allowing her to assume the life of a countess from then on … Shot by Gerhard Lamprecht in 1933, this musical comedy about dreams of upward social mobility is the best example of the director’s many years of collaboration with women on both sides of the camera. The film’s style is rooted in Weimar cinema, although the regressive ideas about gender roles and class of the Nazi era are already apparent.

AN ERA OF UPHEAVAL
With a newly composed score by Marco Brosolo
Introduction: Kristina Jaspers (curator, Deutsche Kinemathek)
Thomas, the eldest son of the respected Buddenbrook merchant family, is commissioned to handle a grain delivery for his home town of Lübeck. If he fails to deliver on time, he is threatened with a heavy penalty. When his brother Christian, more a ladies’ man than a businessman, forgets an important bank transfer, the professional and personal downfall of the middle-class family takes its course. Loosely based on Thomas Mann’s eponymous novel, the action was moved to the 1920s and therefore reflected the audience’s own experiences of social upheaval in the 1920s. The film’s success ensured Gerhard Lamprecht’s breakthrough as a director and is a good example of his longtime collaboration with screenwriter Luise Heilborn-Körbitz.
