Life Along the Rivulet

‘Leben am Fließ’, GDR 1990, directed by Peter Rocha, 28 min, German with no subtitles, rated: 6

The Sorbian film production group was founded by DEFA in 1980 to document and maintain the cultural heritage of the Sorbs. Peter Rocha, himself of Sorbian origin, makes a portrait of the region of Lower Lusatia, which is known for its beautiful nature – as well as open-cast mining and power plants. The film introduces a Spreewald boatman and his family, who are connected by a strong sense of community. Observations of everyday life are linked to his thoughts about the connection between people and nature.
